The 2023 Color Run was a great success at Cheatham. Coach Nelson and the Specials Team did a fantastic job putting this event together for our Students.

Congratulations to our 2022-23 Exceptional Service Award winner Maria Sida, Custodian! The Exceptional Service Award is the district’s highest honor for classified staff members.

These individuals display the following attributes:

-Expert in their job responsibilities

Cheatham students demonstrated their writing skills to the Laveen Governing Board in February. Instructional coach Brittney Downs, 8th grade science teacher Stephen Gabaldon, and 7th grade math teacher Cecily Vanegas, presented how the school integrates writing through all subject areas via its Professional Learning Community process.

Cheatham’s 6th and 7th Grade students visited Junior Achievement’s JA BizTown and JA Finance Park. This field trip took learning out of the classroom and into a hands-on environment. Students wrote checks, ran business, paid bills, and learned how to budget. The trip was sponsored by Desert Tree Farms.

Lori Hashimoto from Chef in the Garden and Blue Watermelon Project introduced the kindergarteners in Mrs. Turnbull’s class to preparing and enjoying temaki, an Asian spinach, avocado, and orange hand roll. You can imagine how fun it was to watch them experience all the new smells, textures, and flavors. Students also learned how to plant spinach in our very own Cheatham garden.

A few Arizona Cardinals players stopped by Cheatham School last week to enjoy milk and cookies with a few classes.The Milk & Cookies reading program selects one school across the state each week during the football season to visit and encourage students to read. Mrs. Mendez’s 3rd grade class and Ms. Hermann’s first grade class were beyond excited to be selected this year. Big Red, Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders and Arizona Cardinals player, Koda Martin stressed the importance of reading before sitting down to read some of their own favorite books. After the stories, Martin played a fun game of Heads Up, answered kid-approved questions, and signed a backpack for each student. The session ended with students enjoying milk and cookies. “This is the best day of my life,” said one 3rd grader. Thanks to the Cardinals, it was definitely a day students will remember for a lifetime. The Arizona Cardinals, SRP, and Albertsons-Safeway have been teaming up for 20 years to offer the “Milk & Cookies” reading program.

District superintendent Dr. Sprout held an assembly at each school to introduce all third and fourth-grade students to the Superintendent’s Math-All Stars Club, challenging students to spend 15 minutes a day practicing math skills. Students who join the club will be given a Chromebook to use at home for the duration of the school year. Students will participate in the ALEKS online math program, a companion product to the district’s math curriculum. ALEKS uses adaptive tools to tailor students’ math practice to their identified needs. Dr. Sprout will appear in Google Classroom videos monthly to congratulate students and introduce the month’s challenges and monthly prizes.
